Volunteers needed to build camp for 300 local children’s holidays!

Local children’s charity Derby Kids’ Camp is urgently seeking additional volunteers to help build their ‘canvas village’ ahead of 300 local disadvantaged children arriving on site for a much-needed holiday.

The camp is built each year from the ground up, and includes 6 marquees, 10 children’s tents, a plumbing and electricity system and a fully-functioning kitchen. It provides a base for the hundreds of children and volunteers staying on site over the summer.

Derby Kids’ Camp is an entirely volunteer-run charity which provides free holidays for local children aged 8 – 11 years old. The children have all been nominated by their schools for being in need of a holiday. This can be for a wide range of reasons, such as financial difficulties, bereavement, bullying and being a young carer.

For five weeks of the summer holidays, over 60 children and 30 volunteers each week camp with the charity, with hot meals also being prepared on site, and children’s sleeping tents and beds provided for them.

Derby Kids’ Camp Chairman, Chris Edwards explained;
“In order for our camp site to be ready in time for the arrival of the first group of 60 children, we have just 3 days to build the entire site, install all utilities and have all our equipment, bedding, kitchen and more in place. Camp is built entirely by volunteers and this year we are really struggling to recruit enough people to ensure we are ready in time.
“Anyone with either a spare few hours, a day or two – no matter what level of experience or fitness, will be a huge help in ensuring we are ready on time. Male, female, young or old, there are tasks to be done from erecting the marquees and tents, to sorting the craft equipment and making the beds. Anyone who can offer us a little of their time will make a huge difference to ensure so many local children enjoy a holiday this summer that they will never forget.”

Volunteers are needed between 10 am on Thursday 26th July to 12 noon on Saturday 28th July. Attendance can be for the entire period (with free camping available on site), during the day time or for a few hours. All meals during camp will be provided and transport can often be arranged from Derby if required.

About Derby Kids’ Camp

Every year, Derby Kids’ Camp provides much-needed, free holidays for over 300 deserving children. These children are nominated by their schools for a variety of social and economic reasons.

The week-long holidays are based in the beautiful surroundings of the Peak District, and are packed with a wide range of activities to suit all characters and interests.

The holidays give children the chance to make new friends, try out new activities and develop their confidence and independence as well as having a lot of fun! For many of the children, this will be the only break from home they will have all year.

Derby Kids’ Camp is a 100% volunteer-run charity, with around 170 volunteers giving their time each year.
