We’re urgently recruiting another 12 enthusiastic and caring volunteers to fill our ‘Week 5’ volunteer spaces and enable us to provide a holiday to the week’s usual total of 61 children.
Week 5 of Summer Camp is running from the 24th – 31st August 2019. Working in teams, volunteers will support the children to participate in activities, make new friends and get the most out of their holiday, as well as ensuring they are well cared for throughout the week.
The week is a residential volunteering role, with volunteers camping onsite from Saturday to Saturday. Meals and transport to all trips is provided, and Derby Kids’ Camp can provide assistance with arranging transport from Derby and loaning camping equipment where necessary.
The children are aged 8-11 and nominated by local primary schools, for a range of reasons including financial hardship, difficulties with social interaction and providing respite for single parent families.
The holidays provide the city children with a week in the countryside, with visits to the farm, adventure playground and swimming pool, alongside local walks and on-site activities. Schools and parents frequently tell us that children have returned home with greater confidence and independence, as well as many happy memories of their time away.
Derby Kids’ Camp Chairman, Chris Edwards, said “In recent years the number of nominations for holidays has grown significantly and Derby Kids' Camp has worked hard to increase the number of children we can support. However, more child places also requires an increase in our volunteer support team. We already have 160 volunteers signed up to help us throughout the summer this year, but we really need around another 12 volunteers to ensure that none of this year's nominated children miss out on a much-needed holiday.”
Derby Kids’ Camp is an entirely volunteer-run charity and the holidays are provided free of cost to all families – including transport to and from Derby. All volunteers will need to undertake a DBS check (formerly known as a CRB) and provide two references.
