Across five weeks of the school holidays every year, over 300 local young children arrive at Derby Kids’ Camp for a free holiday they will never forget.
Nominated by local schools and social services in Derby and Derbyshire, the children have a variety of reasons they need a break – including difficulties with social interaction, their family needing respite or financial hardship at home making it difficult or impossible for the child to otherwise have a holiday.
A week at Derby Kids’ Camp provides a child with a much-needed break in the beautiful surroundings of the Peak District, giving them chance to make new friends, develop their confidence, become more independent and create happy childhood memories.
"Camp changed Archie's* life! He returned as a confident, happy boy who is now more settled in school and no longer open to social care. A massive thank you to you all again!" - Social worker (*name changed for privacy)
In order to provide these holidays, we require the amazing support of around 170 volunteers who come and join us on Camp for a week. Our ‘volunteer army’ cover every aspect of caring for and thoroughly entertaining the children for the week, ensuring they are happy, warm and having a brilliant time!
Most volunteers will be a Group Leader, taking care of a small group of children alongside one or two other helpers. Group Leaders are the first point of contact for children during the holiday, supporting the children during activities and meal times, helping them develop the confidence to join in and ensuring they have plenty of warm and dry clothing.
Alongside being a Group Leader, volunteers will be part of one or more teams running different activities - such as indoor crafts and games, sports, campfire songs or walks - playing to their strengths and preferences noted on the application form.
With a ratio of one volunteer to every two children, we are highly staffed and able to provide plenty of support to both the children and volunteers staying with us during what can be a very busy and action-packed week!
Each week also has a Cook Team who do a fantastic job keeping around 100 children and volunteers well-fed throughout the week! We have a well-equipped Cook Tent where all the food preparation takes place, complete with gas ovens, hobs and fridges alongside freezers at the top of the field. There are opportunities to volunteer alongside experienced DKC Cooks during a week of Summer Camp.
"We have been sending children to Summer Camp for a number of years now. The children come from all walks of life and are selected for many different reasons. The results have been astounding. One child boarded the bus only talking to a select few people, when the new year started this child was a different person, she was running around, singing and shouting." - Dave Smith, Gayton Primary School
Our Summer Camp Volunteering is a 7-night residential role from Saturday lunch time through until 12 noon on the following Saturday. Volunteers camp on site in their own tents, however we are usually able to lend out tents and camping equipment to volunteers who don’t have their own.
Certain weeks are likely to fill up very quickly, so please complete and return your application form as soon as possible to ensure your place on your preferred week.
All Derby Kids’ Camp volunteers require a current DBS check (previously known as CRB); if you do not have a current DBS check through Derby Kids’ Camp you will be asked to complete one by the DKC management team.
Derby Kids’ Camp is a 100% volunteer-run charity and also has opportunities at different points of the year to help with building and taking down camp, maintaining equipment, fundraising and management. Please contact email@example.com if you’d be interested in helping us with this.
