A firm of solicitors which has raised more than £700 for a children’s charity has seen for themselves the difference their money makes.
Charlotte Rosser, Rob Styles and Kristin Clark from Robinsons Solicitors visited Derby Kids’ Camp, which provides holidays for around 350 disadvantaged youngsters at its Summer Camp outside of Ashbourne each summer.
The company, which has branches in Derby and Ilkeston, adopted Derby Kids’ Camp as its annual charity in January and has held cake sales and coffee mornings to raise funds. Its latest event was a quiz, which saw ten businesses enter teams of five to battle it out in a bid to prove they had the best ‘general knowledge’. Mabe Allen won with a score of 68 out of 74, and there was a tie breaker for the wooden spoon between teams Toyota Elite and Robinsons Solicitors’ CBA team, with CBA winning the spoon.
Kristin Clark, who works for Robinsons Solicitors and organises the firm’s fundraising, said: “I’d like to thank everyone who has supported our activities to date, especially our quiz, which was a huge success and raised nearly £500. Without the businesses who entered teams and donated prizes, it simply wouldn’t have been possible. A great time was had by all and as a result we’ve decided to make this an annual event.”
Neil Barnes, managing director of Robinsons Solicitors, added: “All too often, we raise money for charity but never get the chance to see the difference it makes; we were therefore delighted to receive the invitation to ‘go on camp’ and are looking forward to meeting the children and having some fun joining in the activities!”
Derby Kids’ Camp is run entirely by unpaid volunteers and receives no Government funding, so needs to raise in the region of £35,000 per year to fund its five week-long holidays. Chris Edwards, Chairman of Derby Kids’ Camp says that the support of local businesses like Robinsons is invaluable. He said: “In real terms, every £100 donated to us, means that we can take one child on holiday.
“These holidays are truly life changing for the children we support, helping them to relax, make friends and enjoy life away from the city. However, raising £35,000 each year is a big ask, so we rely heavily on the support of local businesses such as Robinsons Solicitors and the wider community to help us achieve our target.
The children, aged seven to 11, are nominated by their schools for a variety of different reasons, which typically include financial circumstances, difficult family situations such as living with elderly grandparents or in care, or because the children are shy and struggle to fit in at school. As well as the summer breaks, the charity also organises long weekend breaks for young carers. These weekends give them a chance to enjoy respite from their responsibilities and some carefree time with their peers.
In addition to holding the quiz, Robinsons Solicitors is now collecting DVDs and CDs to ‘turn into cash’ for the charity and will be holding a fundraising cream-tea morning.
